Niels Grarup

Niels Grarup graduated as MD from University of Copenhagen in 2003. After some years with clinical duties, he studied for a PhD degree, which he obtained from Faculty of Health Science at Aarhus University in 2009. Since then, he has had research employments at Steno Diabetes Center, Hagedorn Research Institute and University of Copenhagen. He is currently associate professor and group leader at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Centre for Basic Metabolic Research, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Niels Grarup’s research focuses on the molecular pathophysiology and pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, obesity and other components of the metabolic syndrome with a focus on characterizing the genetic contributions to these diseases in Europeans and other populations. He has published ~180 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and among other things, contributed to the identification of genetic variants with a high impact on type 2 diabetes and obesity in the Greenlandic Inuit population. Niels Grarup is currently chair of the EASD Study Group on Genetics of Diabetes and board member of the Scandinavian Society for the Society of Diabetes.
