Arup Das

Arup Das (PhD, MD) is a retina physician and researcher. He is currently Distinguished and Regents’ Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Albuquerque, NM, USA. After graduating from the Medical College of Calcutta, he received his PhD at Medical College of Ohio, Toledo, then ophthalmology residency at Wayne State University in Detroit, and vitreo-retinal fellowship at University of Southern California, Los Angeles. His research interests include angiogenesis, retinal vascular biology, and diabetic retinopathy. His research efforts have bridged both basic sciences and clinical sciences with translational impacts on the management of retinal diseases and development of novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers. His research has been funded by National Institutes of Health, Veterans Administration RD, JDRF and International Retina Research Foundation. Currently, he is the PI of a large NIH-funded study (DRGen Study) collaborating with Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard University and Translational & Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix on genomics of phenotypes of diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Das has been honored with the Gold Fellowship award by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) for his contributions to the vision research. He has served on the NIH Study Section and JDRF review Panel, and is currently a member of the Ophthalmology Working Group of the EDIC Study.
