Christian Herder

Christian Herder

Christian Herder (PhD) is a group leader at the German Diabetes Center and professor (epidemiology) at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany. He studied biology and epidemiology in Germany and the UK and received his PhD in biochemistry from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. His main research interests are: (i) inflammation-related mechanisms leading to type 2 diabetes and complications, and (ii) biomarkers in the prediction and pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications. Christian Herder is member of the Research Coordination Board of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD). In the multicentric German Diabetes Study he coordinates projects on biomarkers and both their pathophysiological and predictive relevance for the development of diabetes-related comorbidities. On the international level he is General Secretary of the Central European Diabetes Association. He is the recipient of several awards, including his lecture at the Rising Star Symposium at the 45th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD 2009) as well as the Ferdinand Bertram Prize from the German Diabetes Association (2013).
