Karina Thieme

Karina Thieme (PhD) holds a bachelor’s degree in Fundamental Health Sciences (2006–2009) and PhD in Sciences, Human Physiology (2010–2014), both from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. During the PhD, she completed a research internship at the Division of Nephrology, Massachusetts General Hospital – Harvard Medical School. She pursued postdoctoral research, funded by São Paulo Research Foundation, at the USP School of Medicine (2015–2018) and conducted an additional postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital (Aug 2016 to Oct 2017).

Currently, she serves as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, USP. She specialises in Organ and System Physiology, with a focus on Renal Physiology. Her main research interests involve the pathophysiology of chronic kidney diseases, emphasising the molecular and epigenetic mechanisms underlying podocyte function in diabetic kidney disease as well as the development of novel therapeutic approaches.
