Melkam Kebede

Associate Professor Melkam Kebede (PhD) is a cell biologist whose research is dedicated to uncovering the mechanisms behind impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in type 2 diabetes. She leads the Islet Biology and Metabolism Laboratory at the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney, where her team investigates the biology of pancreatic beta-cells. Her work focuses on the biogenesis, maturation, stability, and trafficking of insulin secretory granules, using a multidisciplinary approach that includes mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, advanced microscopy, and molecular biology techniques in both cellular and animal models of diabetes.

In addition to her research, A/Prof Kebede plays an active leadership role in the Australian Diabetes Society (ADS), where she currently serves as Honorary Secretary on the ADS National Council. She also contributes to the Society’s mission through her involvement in the Research Advisory Committee, the Education Advisory Committee, and the Early Career Network Subcommittee, supporting research excellence, education, and mentorship across the diabetes research community.
