Niina Sandholm
Niina Sandholm (DSc) is a group leader and an adjunct professor (genetic epidemiology) at the Folkhälsan Research Center and University of Helsinki, Finland. She studied bioinformatics and defended her doctoral thesis on genetics of diabetic kidney disease in 2014 at the Aalto University, Finland. She has been a key member of the international consortia for genetics of diabetic kidney disease, and she was a recipient of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes Rising Star Award in 2016. She is the principal investigator of the FinnDiane Study Group that aims to identify clinical, environmental and genetic risk factors for diabetic complications. She has over 80 original publications, and her current research focus includes genetic, epigenetic, proteomic, and other omics research of diabetic kidney disease and other diabetic complications and diabetes related traits.
