Patrick Schrauwen

Patrick Schrauwen received his PhD at the Maastricht University, where he worked as a professor of metabolic aspects of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Since 2024, he is deputy group leader at the Institute for Clinical Diabetology at the German Diabetes Center in Düsseldorf. His research focuses on human translational research in type 2 diabetes mellitus, with a special emphasis on insulin resistance, lipotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, exercise, circadian rhythms, brown fat and muscle,  and human energy metabolism. In his research he combines molecular techniques and state-of-the-art non-invasive imaging technology (MRI/MRS) with human clinical intervention trials..

He received several awards for his work, among which the rising star award in 2008 and the Minkowski Award of the EASD in 2016. He was board member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes from 2021 until 2025, and established and chaired the EASD Academy, an initiative to support, train and mentor early career researchers in the field of diabetes.
