Ross Laybutt

Ross Laybutt is the Head of the Islet Biology Laboratory at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney and Conjoint Associate Professor at St Vincent’s Clinical School, UNSW Sydney. He received his PhD degree from the University of New South Wales on glucose oversupply and insulin action under the supervision of Ted Kraegen (1998). He undertook a postgraduate fellowship at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School in Boston on islet beta cell research under the supervision of Gordon Weir. His research investigates the mechanisms of beta cell failure in type 2 diabetes. His work has identified roles of endoplasmic reticulum stress and inhibitor of differentiation proteins in beta cell dysfunction and death.
